Busses are currently the least handicapped accessible form of transportation in the United States.  Yet handicapped people need public transportation even more than able bodied people.  This is about to change. Using the same technology to load and unload from ground level as the Trescott Safety Truck, Safety Busses will be able to offer the same level of service to handicapped and bicycling customers as pedestrians without the need for a ramp, wheelchair lift, or stairs to board or leave the vehicle.
The suspension can lower the bus down to the ground for boarding.  The additional width of the vehicle allows the aisle to be four feet wide—enough for people in wheelchairs to turn around so they will not miss their bus stops.
Any bus that can accomodate wheelchairs can also welcome bicyclists.  The combination of busses, bicycles, electric scooters for senior citizens will eliminate most people's need for cars.  Wheeled carts can be brought on board to carry groceries.  The fenders on the new busses are taller than on older busses, so the fenders are good places for baggage and bicycle parking. Additional storage for bags exists between the seats—which are oriented so people can face each other for friendly conversation rather than all facing in the same direction.  A forest of thickly padded posts prevents passengers in wheelchairs and bicycles from becoming projectiles in a crash.
The safety bus is wider than existing busses—about eleven feet wide.  It will require more skill to drive than existing busses, but computerized video lane following technology will allow the bus to negotiate crowded urban areas within twelve foot lanes.  A small ramp will engage the curb so wheeled passengers may board the bus without having to step up or down.
All of these images are screen shots from the computer animation "Why is this illegal" by William B. Trescott.  VHS copies are available for broadcast by sending an e-mail containing a link to your station website to trescott@truckingvideo.com.
